Today, the House passed H.R. 5982, the Midnight Rules Relief Act of 2016 (Rep. Darrell E. Issa, R-CA), which will allow Congress to disapprove regulations submitted by federal agencies within the last 60 legislative days of Congress during a President’s final term. Chairman Rob Bishop (R-UT) issued the following statement:

“Given the arrogance this president and the administration under his direction continues to exhibit in his last days—with more and more ruthless regulations smothering the American people—this bill is the least we should do to force more accountability on his imperial actions. I urge the Senate act quickly to put a stop to the president’s midnight madness.”

H.R. 5982 would give Congress the opportunity to overturn several rules under the Committee’s jurisdiction, including the Bureau of Land Management’s methane rule announced earlier this week and the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement’s forthcoming stream buffer rule.
