OVERSIGHT HEARING ON:

  • Secretarial Order 3310, 'Wild Lands'

WITNESSES AND TESTIMONY:

The Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands oversight hearing on "Secretarial Order 3310, 'Wild Lands'" scheduled to meet on Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. in Room 1324 Longworth House Office Building will be postponed until further notice, date and time to be determined.

BACKGROUND:

In December 2010, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced Secretarial Order 3310 directing the Bureau of Land Management to designate areas with wilderness characteristics as "wild lands." In a move by the Obama Administration to circumvent Congress's sole authority to allocate Wilderness areas, this order could place a vast amount of public land off-limits to energy production, recreational use and other job-creating activities. H.R. 1473, the 2011 Continuing Resolution that funds the federal government through FY2011, included provisions to prevent the Interior Department from using funds to implement the Wild Lands order.
